Description

This course provides a practical introduction to MARPOL, the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships. You’ll learn why MARPOL was created, how it is enforced internationally, and how it affects the design, operation, and maintenance of modern ships.

The course explores all six MARPOL annexes, covering oil pollution, noxious liquid substances, harmful packaged goods, sewage, garbage management, and air pollution. You’ll also learn about oily water separators, garbage management plans, sulfur emission limits, NOx emission tiers, emission control areas, and exhaust gas scrubber systems.

Through clear explanations and real-world maritime examples, the course demonstrates how MARPOL regulations influence daily shipboard operations, marine engineering practices, and environmental compliance. The role of flag states, port state control inspections, record books, and certification systems are also discussed.

By the end of this course, you’ll understand the structure, purpose, and operational impact of MARPOL and its importance in protecting the marine environment from pollution caused by ships.
