This course provides a comprehensive introduction to non-fired compressed air pressure vessels, commonly known as air receivers, air storage tanks, air bottles, air cylinders, or air accumulators. It explains their terminology and the fundamental principles of their design, installation, operation, and maintenance.
You’ll learn why pressure vessels use cylindrical bodies and hemispherical ends, how pressure boundaries work, and why sharp corners, penetrations, and welds can create stress concentrations. The course also covers the importance of construction materials, nondestructive testing, manufacturing standards, and certification for pressure vessel safety and reliability.
The course examines where an air receiver fits within a compressed air system, including compressors, cooling, refrigerated air dryers, condensate removal, filters, regulators, lubricators, and air distribution. You’ll also discover the four main reasons for using an air receiver: reserve capacity, smoother pressure fluctuations, reduced compressor cycling, and moisture removal.
Using detailed 3D models and explanations, the course explores common pressure vessel fittings and safety equipment, including pressure gauges, safety relief valves, fusible plugs, condensate drains, manholes, lifting lugs, nameplates, and isolation valves.
Finally, the course covers inspection and maintenance activities, including visual inspections, condensate drainage, safety relief valve replacement, internal inspections, weld inspection, nondestructive testing, and hydrostatic pressure testing. It explains why testing with water is safer than testing a pressure vessel using compressed air.
By the end of the course, you’ll have a solid understanding of compressed air pressure vessel design, system integration, safety protection, fittings, inspection, maintenance, and certification requirements.
