Description

This course introduces the three fundamental electrical circuit conditions: open circuits, closed circuits, and short circuits. You’ll learn how an electrical circuit provides a path for current, the role of voltage sources, conductors, loads, and switches, and how the condition of the conducting path determines circuit operation.

The course explains how an open circuit interrupts current flow, why voltage can still be present across an open point, and how faults such as broken conductors, loose terminals, blown fuses, and disconnected connectors can create open circuits. You’ll also learn how a closed circuit provides the intended path for current and how voltage, current, and resistance are related using Ohm’s law.

The course then examines short circuits, explaining how unintended low-impedance paths can produce excessive current, rapid heating, equipment damage, and potentially electric arcs. Protective devices such as fuses and circuit breakers are also discussed. By the end of the course, you’ll understand the key differences between open, closed, and short circuits and how these conditions can be identified during electrical troubleshooting.
