Description

Single-phase and three-phase power are the two common forms of AC electrical power used in residential, commercial, industrial, and marine applications. This course explains the differences between single-phase and three-phase systems, including their waveforms, phase relationships, voltage configurations, power equations, and typical applications.

You will learn how single-phase power uses one alternating voltage waveform and how split-phase systems provide two hot conductors that are 180 degrees apart. The course then introduces three-phase power, where three equal waveforms are separated by 120 electrical degrees, providing smoother power delivery and making three-phase systems particularly suitable for motors and larger electrical loads.

The course also explains RMS voltage and current, power factor, single-phase and three-phase power equations, line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltage, and the differences between three-wire and four-wire three-phase systems. Practical applications in residential, commercial, industrial, and marine environments are also covered.
