Description

This course provides a clear and practical introduction to the SOLAS Convention (International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea), one of the most important international treaties governing maritime safety. You’ll learn why SOLAS was created, its historical background following the RMS Titanic disaster, and how it has evolved into a globally enforced safety framework.

The course explains the structure of SOLAS, including its key chapters covering ship construction, fire protection, lifesaving appliances, navigation safety, and machinery systems. You’ll also explore how the convention is maintained by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and updated through the tacit acceptance procedure.

In addition, the course highlights how SOLAS affects real-world ship operations, from engine room design and firefighting systems to emergency drills, equipment maintenance, and certification requirements. The relationship between SOLAS and other conventions such as STCW, MARPOL, ISM Code, and the Load Line Convention is also discussed.

By the end of this course, learners will understand how SOLAS sets minimum safety standards and ensures ships, crew, and systems are prepared to prevent and respond to emergencies at sea.
