Description

Water tube and fire tube boilers generate steam using different arrangements of water and hot combustion gases. In a water tube boiler, water flows through tubes surrounded by hot gases. In a fire tube boiler, hot exhaust gases flow through tubes surrounded by water.

This course explains how both boiler types operate, including combustion, heat transfer, steam generation, and steam separation. It also compares their construction, operating pressures, steam production capacity, efficiency, response to load fluctuations, maintenance requirements, and installation considerations.

You will learn why water tube boilers are used in power stations that require high-pressure steam and large steam production capacity, while fire tube boilers are commonly used for lower-pressure applications where compact, packaged, and relatively simple equipment is advantageous.

What you will learn in this course
  • Understand the operating principles of water tube and fire tube boilers
  • Explain the differences between water-filled tubes and flue-gas-filled tubes
  • Understand boiler combustion, heat transfer, and steam generation
  • Identify the roles of furnace walls, steam drums, superheaters, and vapor spaces
  • Compare the operating pressure limits of both boiler types
  • Explain why water tube boilers are suitable for high-pressure power generation
  • Identify the main factors affecting boiler selection and installation
